Overview

Kathryn Scott has used a variety of business simulations both as a student and as a Lecturer, having first used them in Switzerland. As an advocate of business simulations, Kathryn was approved funding to trial a simulation on the Marketing and Communications module. After a successful trial using the My Marketing Experience simulation, Kathryn now uses it each year to embed experiential and student-led learning within her modules.

WHY DID YOU CONSIDER USING Business SIMULATIONS?

“I have experience of using business simulations when I was studying in Switzerland and then used them while I was teaching there, as well. I have been an advocate of using them and managed to get funding from our Curriculum Head at the University of Derby to trial a simulation for a year. The results were very positive so we built it into the budget for the years ahead.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE EDUMUNDO?

“I had been recommended Edumundo from a colleague. I tried the 'My Marketing Experience' simulation and really liked it so I used it for the trial year. After the trial proved to meet the learning objectives of the overall module I decided to use it for future years."

How Were Students Assessed On The Module?

"There’s one summative assessment where they reflect on their performance of what went well and what didn’t, applying theory/approaches to those decisions. They also have to produce a marketing plan based on the company they managed in the simulation."

Did the simulation meet the desired learning outcomes?

"Yes. The simulation is aligned to three learning KPIs within the module and all three were met, and we received good scores on student satisfaction."

What Feedback Have You Received From Your Students?

“Once the students start engaging with it they really enjoy it: they like the fact that is self-directed and the competitive and creative elements such as coming up with a company name and brand logo.”
